Laura Marcus Life-Writing Workshop TT1: Process, Collaboration - and NOT Writing a Book
Process, Collaboration - and NOT Writing a Book
Friday 12 May, 10.30am - 12.30pm (UK time)
History of the Book Room, St Cross Building (English Faculty), Manor Road, OX1 3UL
Please note that this event is NOT at Wolfson College.
Professor Kirsten Shepherd-Barr will lead the first Laura Marcus Life-Writing workshop of this term. She will be joined by Tzen Sam (doctoral candidate in English, and Research Assistant on the Laura Kieler project) and Dr Lauren Cullen (co-creator of the Fanny Shepherd web site). They will be discussing two in-progress life-writing projects that both explore female writers and employ modes that are alternative to the book-form biographies we are used to discussing: one is a play and one is a web site.
The focus for this workshop will be on how NOT writing a book-biography in the first instance is providing a completely different perspective and purchase on biographical subjects. It will emphasize process and collaboration as key to gaining insight and fresh perspectives on life-writing.
This workshop will be chaired by Professor Elleke Boehmer and Dr Kate Kennedy.
You can find out more about the projects here:
- A Knowledge-Exchange Fellowship collaboration with Breach Theatre to develop a new play about Laura Kieler, who was the real-life model for Nora in Ibsen's A Doll's House (1879).
- 'Pulling up Stakes' about Professor Shepherd-Barr's great-grandmother, Fanny Shepherd (1866-1937), which is on the university platform Cabinet.
