Laura Marcus Life-Writing Workshop: Prof Laurie Maguire, 'Judith Shakespeare: Her Story'
Laura Marcus Life-Writing Workshop
Judith Shakespeare: Her Story
with Professor Laurie Maguire
Judith Quiney (née Shakespeare), the twin of Hamnet, has had a bad press. Unmarried at 31, deemed illiterate, not buried in Holy Trinity Church – it has been easy for writers to give her a negative footnote in biographies of her famous father. Any biographer of Judith has first to unwrite these entrenched stories before facing the more obvious problem of the gaps in Judith’s long life (1585–1662). In writing this biography, Laurie Maguire allows Judith to co-author her own story.
Workshop Leader:
Laurie Maguire is Professor Emeritus at Oxford University and a Fellow of Magdalen College. She is the author or editor of ten books on Shakespeare and Renaissance drama. She is currently writing a biography of Shakespeare’s younger daughter, Judith Quiney.
