Taryn Tavener-Smith is a PhD student in the Department of Literature and Languages at the
University of Stirling. She works as an Early Career Researcher at Buckinghamshire New
University teaching writing and research to undergraduate students across disciplines. Taryn
holds a BA (Honours) and Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of
Johannesburg. Her doctoral research considers the liminality of subjects in non-fiction life writing
while exploring the boundaries of liminal identities within the context of South African film. She
holds an affinity for the multidisciplinary application of Victor Turner’s Theory of Liminality.
Taryn serves as an avid contributor to the University of Stellenbosch’s peer-reviewed
Encyclopaedia of South African Theatre, Film, Media, and Performance (ESAT). Her other
research interests extend to the Gothic genre with a particular focus on the monstrous-feminine,
spectres, madness, and vampires in contemporary British fiction.
